The Directions

All cultures throughout Mesoamerica place mythological and cosmological importance on the four cardinal directions. Sometimes this number is five, including the “center”.

North

Tezcatlipoca is the Tezcatlipoca of the North.
Mictlanpachecatl is the Ehecatotontli of the north wind.

South

Huitzilopochtli is the Tezcatlipoca of the South.
The Aztecs associated the color blue with the South.
Huitztlampaehecatl is the Ehecatotontli of the south wind.

East

Xipe Totec is the Tezcatlipoca of the East.
Tlalocayotl is the Ehecatotontli of the east wind.

West

Quetzalcoatl is the Tezcatlipoca of the West.
Cihuatecayotl is the Ehecatotontli of the west wind.

Center

The Maya associated the color blue with the Center.
